Minor security vulnerability on the n800, or an overreaction … continued

Well turns out this was only affecting the MicroB browser engine, not the default Opera one. Still a flaw, and I’ve raised a bug log entry #2167. Lets hope its fixed before the n810 and OS2008 get released :)

Minor security vulnerability on the n800, or an overreaction?

I just found something interesting in the browser on the n800. If you are at a website which has a username and password (where the password is one of those **** fields) – if you click on the username and type that in then click on the password field, when you type the password it doesn’t show the letters in the predictive text area. Thats all well and good.

However…

If you use the down dpad key, it does show what you type (your password) as a full word in the predictive text bit of the keyboard. This seems like a bit of a flaw, or am I just being paranoid?

n800 vs n810

At the excellent blog http://tabletblog.com theres a great post about the n800 vs the n810 and what tasks they are both best suited for. Also some interesting views of GPS on the devices and the location aware possibilities that can open up.

Slowdown in new applications

I saw on the excellent blog www.n800blog.com a great question: http://www.n800blog.com/blog.aspx?id=54&story=Where_are_all_the_apps?

In summary, where are all the new applications? It seems like there is a slowdown in new apps, and I can say I’ve noticed it as well. My guess is that its due to the new OS coming out soon, most people looking to do this (myself included) may as well wait until the new OS is available for the n800 before setting up scratchbox environments and compiling apps. Who knows what may change between the old and new environment?

Have any views? Let me know in the comments!

The n800 as a music device continued…

I posted the below question about which package to try on the n800 for music notation and got the excellent tip: a program called NoteEdit:

http://noteedit.berlios.de

I’ll be trying to compile this in the scratchbox if I ever manage to download the torrent vmware image!

My n800 setup

I know its terrible passe, but I thought I’d write a list of the software I use and default setup options.

Software catalogues added (you can see this in /etc/apt/sources.list):

The usual essentials are:
xterm
gainroot
openssh

Other items:
Leafpad
gconf
MaemoPad+
VNC Server
VNC Viewer
Autoscan
WifiInfo
Maemo Mapper
GPE Calendar
Battle Gweled
LXDoom
TuxPuck
Freeciv
Nethack
omWeather applet

I also install htop using Red Pill mode: http://maemo.org/development/documentation/man_pages/htop.html

I found a link that described a way of being able to browse root through file manager, quite clever:
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-7512.html

1. Start an xterm
2. insert following command in xterm
ln -s / /home/user/MyDocs/root
3. exit xterm

Though make sure you take the instructions from the following website to stop metacrawler using all the CPU:

Anyone have any other programs they love to use on their n800/n770? Or any other repositories? Let me know!

The n800 as a music device

Is it just me or would the n800 make a great device for making music?

Probably not for multi track recording, thats wishful thinking! I was thinking more as a music notation device. I saw that Timidity is working on the n800 so it can process MIDI, I just want to compose, not just play!

In the past I’ve used Rosegarden on linux (http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/) but its a little too full featured to be realistic on the n800. I was thinking of porting something purely just to do music notation, and nothing quite as full featured as Finale (for those in the music notation biz, Finale is the best of the lot).

So once I manage to download the Vmware dev kit, I’ll try Brahms (http://brahms.sourceforge.net/) – it might also be a bit too much for the n800 but I thought it’d be a good place to start.

Does anyone have any experience with any other notation packages? Let me know!

Clear the history of the N800 Google Search app

Hi!

Just a quick one, say you had some things in the Google Search application of your Nokia Internet Tablet you’d rather didn’t pop up every time, how do you clear them?

Simply gainroot, and edit /home/user/.osso/mis/internet-search-applet.xml. You’ll see your past search queries as such:

<strings>

<string>Search phrase you don’t want</string>

There can be multiple entries, just remove the ones you don’t want.

Hope that helps!

I just added sites to my blogroll so I can keep track of them, if anyone would like their site removed from my blogroll please let me know.

Also I’m open to suggestions for new sites to check out related to Nokia n770, n800, n810, maemo and/or hildon.

And, if I’m posting info thats either incorrect or is presented in another blog/website let me know.
